The Power of Symbol & Sigil

Jan 24, 2021 | Magick, Spiritcraft

Consciousness is the very substrate of the universe, and out of it arises the experience of the physical world which we find ourselves in. And the blueprint used for shaping this experience of a reality is “meaning”. This is why we do not live in a “meaningless universe”. Rather, there is a “narrative” unfolding in our lives. There is a meaning behind them, for meaning structures reality! Indeed, we exist to impart certain meanings to this reality, and to live and experience them as well.

And this important role of meaning in constructing reality is why magick works. Meaning is imparted through communication, and spells are strings of intention and meaning which we send out into the universe (like sending out programming instructions to reality). When our communications of meaning and intention are received by the universe, they mix with the intentions of other spirits and consciousnesses, and out of this balance of complimentary and competing intentions, reality unfolds and events are generated. Oftentimes your intentions are strong enough to sway the balance in your favor and deliver your desires to you, especially when there are no competing interests with strong intentions.

The language of this magickal communication is “symbol”. Different symbols express particular meanings. Symbols can be spoken or unspoken, written or drawn, and acted out or visualized. There are of course common archetypal symbols, however there are also symbols that are meaningful to you in particular (if not only you!) And it is these symbols which we use when communicating our intentions through sigil magick.

The very process of generating these personalized symbols (sigils) is what makes them so so powerful. To draw a sigil is to impart meaning and intention to a form embodied in the physical world. One reason why this is particularly effective is, unlike a spoken word or action, a sigil or glyph has a lasting presence (even if only for the length of the ceremony). During this lasting presence, you can impart more intention to the symbol than is possible for a fleeting word or action. The process of drawing a representation of your meaning takes your will and intention and crystallizes it in a solid form. From there, it can be sent out into the universe to mix your will and intention with those of the rest of this living universe!
